What if I have severe abdominal pain?

Severe abdominal pain is not typical of threadworms and should be assessed urgently, especially with vomiting, fever, swelling, blood in stool or feeling very unwell.

What if I have diarrhoea or vomiting?

Threadworms do not usually cause significant diarrhoea or vomiting. Persistent or severe symptoms should be assessed because another infection or condition may be present.

What if I have recently travelled abroad?

Recent travel can raise the possibility of other worm infections or gut infections. If worms are unusual, symptoms are severe or travel-related infection is possible, GP assessment may be needed.

What if the worms do not look like threadworms?

Threadworms are small, white and thread-like. Larger worms, segments, dark worms or unusual findings should be reviewed by a GP because treatment may differ.

What if symptoms keep returning every few weeks?

Frequent recurrence may be due to reinfection, untreated household contacts or incomplete hygiene control. GP advice may be needed if repeated courses and hygiene measures have not resolved the problem.

What if I am immunocompromised?

People with immune suppression, chemotherapy, transplant medicines, high-dose steroids or serious long-term illness should seek GP or specialist advice if symptoms are persistent, severe or recurrent.
